Stop pretending we can return to the world that we grew up in.
The Canada where Crosby scored the Golden Goal is gone. The Canada of Mr. Dressup, outdoor ice rinks as childhood staple, leaving your bike on the front lawn. It is all gone. We cannot go back.
Don’t kid yourself, we destroyed it. We became comfortable in our wealth. Secure in our position as America’s favourite little brother. Our western academics even wrote books called, “The End of History and the Last Man”.
Nearly 20% of Canadians today are over the age of 65. Another 20% of current Canadian residents were not born here. There is overlap in these groups of course, but the trend line is a geriatric upper class of Boomers served by a foreign born work force.
It is the apathy, greed, and selfishness of Boomer Canadians that lead us to a situation where Millenials and Gen Z cannot even afford to buy a house, in the country that they were born in. The result is a country where people can hardly be bothered to reproduce.
The robots will take care of us in our old age, our children will look at us as the strange remnants of an analog world in a digital age. The radical transformation of our social world continues to accelerate.
You cannot go back, we must build something new.
